Audition Notice: The Duchess of Malfi

Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts Main Stage Production #4

Production Dates: March 21-25, 2017

Auditions will take place Mon. November 28 from 4:30 pm to 8:00 p.m.  in the David Spinks Theatre (W425)

Please print off and fill out the audition form (below) and attach an 8 1/2 x 11 color headshot of what you currently look like. (This doesn't need to be "professional"; snapshots that are inkjet printed on regular paper will be fine.) Bring these to the audition. (These will be destroyed following the complete casting of the play.)

The audition will consist of presenting 1-2 minute monologue from The Duchess of Malfi. Although memorization is not necessary, the monologue should be thoroughly prepared and rehearsed (see below).  If you need to splice several speeches of the same character together to form a monologue it is okay to do so.

Please book an audition time on the audition sign-up form posted on the door of W718.

Scripts will not be available at the audition - Drama majors can check their @uleth.ca email for a copy that has been sent to them, or speak to Sarah Hilliard in W660.  If you are unable to access this file, there will also be copies of the play available for short-term loan through the U of L Library’s front desk. Please print any pages you need and bring them to the audition.

As mentioned, the monologue need not be memorized, but should be well-enough prepared that you can demonstrate the following:

  • your ability to find and express details in the text: beats, transitions, moments
  • your ability to sense and actively play objectives and tactics
  • your imagination, through the variety of ways you express the two points above and the choices that you make that go beyond the cliché
  • your strong, expressive voice, with clear enunciationand facility with the language of the play
  • your confidence and presence
