Dr. Anne Krook - The Graduate Students’ and Postdocs’ Guide to the Non-Academic Job Market

Dr. Anne Krook will be presenting on the uLethbridge Campus on November 29, 2016 in AH 100.  Her presentation is focused on graduate students, with an additional presentation for faculty and staff who support graduate students.  Students who attend the 3 hour workshop will have a chance to sign up for one-on-one session with Anne the same day! Sign up will occur at the morning workshop and is first come first serve. For a complete schedule please see below.

Dr. Anne Krook is a former academic who transitioned successfully to the corporate and nonprofit workplaces, Dr. Krook helps graduate students and postdocs transition to non-academic workplaces and helps undergraduate Arts and Humanities majors translate their skills into jobs.  She began her career as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, teaching for seven years before moving to Seattle.  After a stint in restaurant bartending, she joined Amazon.com.  During her thirteen years at the company, she held various roles in US  and international website development, program management, internal audit, and infrastructure.  After that, she worked as VP of Operations at a startup, Mindbloom, and then as VP of Operations at Synapse, a product design engineering company in Seattle.  She also serves on the board of directors of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV.

9:00 am - 12:00 (noon) pm - The Graduate Students’ and Postdocs’ Guide to the Non-Academic Job Market

This workshop is designed for anyone interested in pursuing career options beyond the classroom or outside the academy. It describes how the doctorate is viewed by employers outside the academy, teaches strategies and tactics for nonacademic job searches, and provides tools to help assemble one's skills for a résumé. At the end of this workshop you should be equipped to prepare for and conduct a search for a non-academic job, should you ever want or need to.

12:30 pm - 2:30 pm - Faculty and Staff Brown Bag Workshop

This session focuses on supporting students throughout their graduate studies program. Additionally, Dr. Krook will provide information on providing non-academic reference letters and supporting students as they transition into their careers.

3:05 pm - 6:05 pm - Graduate Student One-on-One Sessions 

Students who have attended the workshop may ask Dr. Krook any questions they may haveabout their individual situations in one-on-one sessions. These sessions will be 15-20 minutes in length, allowing for a total of nine sessions.  A sign up sheet will be provided at the Graduate Student Workshop.  Students must attend the workshop in order to qualify for a one-on-one session.  

**uLethbridge Career and Counselling Services will also be one hand for 15-20 minute Resume Rescue sessions.  Sign up will be available at the Graduate Student Workshop.
