by Dr. Jaak Panksepp
Professor
Integrative Physiology & Neuroscience
University of Washington
Pullman, WA
Dr. Jaak Panksepp earned his B.S. in Psychology in 1965 from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. In 1967, he earned his M.S. and in 1969 his Ph.D. both in Physiological Psychology at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. He has authored over 200 scientific articles dealing with the physiological mechanisms that underlie motivated behaviour, and co-edited works such as "Handbook of the Hypothalamus" and "Emotions and Psychopathology," serves as editor of the series "Advances in Biological Psychiatry," and authored the book "Affective Neuroscience: The foundations of Human and Animal Emotions." His lab is devoted to the analysis of the neuroanatomical and neurochemical mechanisms of emotional behaviours (in the emerging fields of affective and social neurosciences), with a focus on understanding how various affective processes are evolutionarily organized in the brain, and looking for linkages to psychiatric disorders and drug addiction.
