The University of Lethbridge extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Howard Cable (DFA ’02), who passed away on Wednesday, March 30 at the age of 95.
Cable was an icon among Canadian artists—he was a composer, arranger and conductor whose career spanned more than 70 years. An online article on CBC Music indicates Cable was still an active musician who, the day before he died, put in a full day writing and proofreading the encore numbers for a concert scheduled for November.
He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000 for his accomplishments in music. A strong advocate for the arts and a believer in the value of arts education, Cable demonstrated this quality by providing his musical guidance to the U of L Wind Orchestra and the Lethbridge Community Gold Band. In 2002, the U of L paid tribute to his contribution to music by conferring upon him a Doctor of Fine Arts honorary degree.
