The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mary Albiston, who passed away Tuesday, March 8, at 85 years of age.
Albiston was a longtime employee of the U of L, having started her employment as a secretary in the Library in 1974. She received a promotion less than a year later and then, in 1981, Albiston became a library clerk, a position she held until she retired in 1994.
Her colleague, Allan Gergel, supervisor, Library information systems, recalls Albiston as personable and very outgoing.
“She had a great sense of humour; we always had a laugh,” he says.
Albiston also made an impression on students, especially those studying music and social work. Music students would come in with their listening lists and Albiston helped them track down the LPs. Social work students often borrowed the library’s video recording equipment to record interactions. As they approached convocation, many of these students recalled how Albiston helped them in their studies over the years.
“They would make a point to stop at the office and thank Mary,” says Gergel. “I remember she used to get a kick out of that.”
At her request, no formal funeral service will be held. An obituary can be found on the Martin Brothers website.
