THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE

A young governess, a Governor’s wife; one is good, one is bad.

Who gets the boy?

In an Epic Theatre parable by the German Marxist master himself, Brecht draws a chalk circle on the ground and asks us to declare where our loyalties lie.  Do we favour the beheaded-Governor’s widow who forgot her sleeping child amid the chaos of choosing her must-have gowns?  Do we favour the young woman who scooped the sleeping boy up and agree with the Singer’s final words:

“What there is should belong

To those who are good at it.”
