The Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series presents:

Earthbound: Reconciling Environmental Protection and Social Justice
Presenter:  Maxime Chambers-Dumont (Undergraduate Student, Philosophy Department)
Day/Date:  Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Location:  C-630

Much of the focus in recent years when discussing the environment has been on the issue of climate change.  However, this obsessive focus on reducing carbon emissions could indeed be negative for many of those worse off around the globe unless a specific effort is taken to maintain global social justice. The argument presented here, drawing on authors such as Amartya Sen, is that a global focus on social justice actually reinforces environmental protection and vice versa. Furthermore, I argue that it is important to shift the frame of reference of climate change away from an environmental issue toward a humanitarian one, and that the various intersections of the policy areas affected by climate change will thereby be covered. This presentation will be interdisciplinary as the challenge of climate change straddles so many fields.

Everyone welcome
