Join the Women Scholars Speakers Series and the Institute for Child and Youth Studies for a talk with Dr. Nina Huntemann on women in gaming.
In recent months a number of feminist gamers, designers and media critics have been the target of the controversial Internet campaign, #GamerGate, prompting discussions of women's experiences and histories online. Using #GamerGate as a case study, Huntmann explores how feminist theory and theories of play upend long held assumptions about gender and video games.
Dr. Huntemann is an associate professor of media and film at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, culture and technology, applying feminist theory and cultural production perspectives to the industrial and social practices of digital gaming. She has co-edited two books: Gaming Globally: Production, Play and Place (Palgrave, 2013) and Joystick Soldiers: The Politics of Play in Military Video Games (Routledge, 2010).
