Condolence Notice — Thomas Smart

The University of Lethbridge expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of retired caretaker Thomas Smart, who passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025 at the age of 83.

Born in Whitburn, Scotland, Smart emigrated to Canada and eventually pursued a career in the electrical field, working at Automatic Electric for years. He joined the University of Lethbridge caretaking team in 1986 and enjoyed a 23-year career working primarily in the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. Smart retired in 2009.

A Celebration of Smart’s life will be held at Cornerstone Funeral Home, 2825 – 32 St. S., Lethbridge, AB, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Daniel Surya officiating. The Celebration of Life will be live-streamed and may be viewed through his obituary on the Cornerstone website.

The University will lower its flag on Dec. 17 in remembrance of Smart.
