In 2019, the University appointed Dr. Leroy Little Bear (BASc (BA) ’72, DASc ’04) as its first Vice-Provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations, marking a pivotal moment in advancing Indigenous engagement and reconciliation across our campus. As Dr. Little Bear’s term is set to conclude on June 30, 2026, the University has formed a search committee to appoint the next Vice-Provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations, in accordance with the Designation and Appointment of Senior Administrator Policy. Note that we are very pleased that Dr. Little Bear will continue in an official advisory role with the University at the conclusion of his Vice-Provost term.
The selection of the next Vice-Provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations is an important undertaking for our university. This role plays a central leadership function in fostering Indigenous-centred scholarship, relationships, and programs, and the successful candidate will guide the continued development and evolution of this priority portfolio for the benefit of our students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities.
The search committee, along with the search consultants, are excited to assist in this critical search. Here is a link to committee membership.
As part of this process, all constituent groups will have the opportunity to provide meaningful input into the vision for Indigenous Relations at the University and the personal and professional qualities and competencies we seek in the next Vice-Provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations to support the realization of this vision. Your engagement will be integral to the work of the committee, and I strongly encourage you to participate as the process unfolds.
Please note that there will be specific sessions for Elders in Residence, Faculty / Employees, Students, Senior Leaders, as well as external partners in community. For those unable to attend any of the scheduled sessions there will also be a survey available to provide feedback.
The following sessions have been scheduled:
December 10th – W646 (Boardroom)
10 – 11 a.m.: Self-Identified Indigenous Faculty and Staff
1 – 2 p.m.: All Faculty and Staff
2 – 3 p.m.: Self-Identified Indigenous Students
3 – 4 p.m.: All Students
Thank you for all that you do for the University of Lethbridge. I look forward to your participation in this important undertaking — one that will continue to shape the future of Indigenous engagement, decolonization and reconciliation at our university.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michelle Helstein
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
