About Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual, International Day of Observance on November 20 that seeks to honour the memories of the transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, and otherwise gender-diverse people whose lives were lost due to acts of anti-transgender violence.

With the growing crisis of misinformation and violence around transgender issues in Canada and the rest of the world, the rights and physical safety of trans+ people is under attack. Transgender people deserve the basic human rights to safety, dignity, and equal protection under the law. For this year’s event, it was essential to create spaces to come together and hear about and learn from the experiences and stories for transgender people, as well as providing spaces for trans+ people to speak, feel heard and valued for the many contributions they bring to our campus and community

This year’s event will focus on highlighting the intersectional experiences of anti-trans and anti-Indigenous violence experienced by Two-Spirit individuals and communities, as well as to create a space for Indigenous views of Transness and Two-Spirit identities.

Trans Day of Remembrance is a time for all of us — straight and queer, cisgender and transgender — to come together to remember those we have lost. Just as importantly, this is also a day to remind ourselves why we are committed to working towards creating a better present and future for all.
