Why it matters:
Batteries are everywhere — powering your phones, laptops, power tools, cameras, eBikes, scooters and other devices. While convenient and efficient, they can pose serious fire and explosion risks if not handled properly.
⚠️ Know the risk:
The biggest hazard is thermal runaway, a chain reaction that can cause batteries to overheat, leak, burst, catch fire or even explode, sending shrapnel up to 18 metres (60 feet) and igniting multiple fires.
✅ Safe Charging & Handling Tips
- Use batteries and chargers that have recognized Canadian certification marks (e.g., CSA, cUL, cETL).
- Follow manufacturer instructions for charging and use only compatible devices.
- Avoid overcharging or charging overnight or unattended.
- Avoid using extension cords for charging.
- Avoid storing, placing or charging batteries or battery-operated devices on soft or flammable materials.
- Unplug chargers or remove batteries once fully charged.
