Moving towards inclusion: Strategies for creating equitable classroom communities with Erin Reid and Charlotte Brenner
Noon until 1:00pm, March 10, 2023, via Zoom
This presentation will focus on how teachers can create physical, social, and academic space within their classrooms for diverse students to connect to curricular content and their peers. Charlotte will provide an overview of how self-regulated learning aligns with the promotion of inclusive teaching practices across the curriculum. Erin will outline how teaching strategies grounded in frameworks of radical empathy and racial literacy can help educators create brave classroom spaces for genuine inclusion.
Erin Reid
With decades of teaching experience at all levels from K-12 to Higher Education, Erin Reid is a lifelong educator whose research interests lie at the intersection of diversity, equity, and education. In particular, she is curious about how religious diversity intersects with other facets of identity in educational contexts. Currently an instructor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge, her teaching practices are centered on helping preservice teachers create equitable and inclusive classroom communities.
Charlotte Brenner
Charlotte Brenner worked as a general and special educator for the Surrey School District for 25 years prior to her recent appointment as an Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Lethbridge. During her time with the Surrey School District Charlotte focused on creating inclusive teaching and learning environments for students and teachers. In her role as Assistant professor at the University of Lethbridge her focus remains on supporting teacher candidates to develop an understanding of what inclusion means and looks like in school and university settings.
