Many of us have had to have difficult conversations over the last two years as we deal with a global pandemic and everything it has added to our already challenging work lives. If anything, these conversations have driven home just how important the relationships we have each other are, and how essential it is to look out for one another.
On Thursday, April 28, we urge everyone to take some time to recognize the National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace, and to think of those workers who have lost their lives or been injured or become ill on the job or due to a work-related tragedy. Sadly, in 2021, Alberta lost 178 people to workplace fatalities and numerous more were negatively affected by work related injury or illness.
The National Day of Mourning is a time to reflect on those who tragically passed away, and to think of the families and friends who now carry this burden of loss with them every day. We also see this day as one of opportunity — to understand our workplaces are forever affected when tragedy occurs and to remind ourselves of the essential roles we collectively play in minimizing the chance for tragedy to occur.
The ULethbridge Health and Safety Advisory Committee is a key part of maintaining a safe campus environment. It works as an advisory body with a focus on identifying health and safety concerns in the workplace and promoting health and safety best practices at the University. To learn more about the committee, check it out here.
It’s important for everyone to be familiar with health and safety protocols on campus, and for us to understand the processes in place for reporting incidents and potential safety hazards in the workplace. Check out the Campus Safety website for more.
On Thursday, the University will lower its flag in remembrance of those who have been affected by workplace death or injury and we hope everyone will take a moment to reflect on the legacies they left behind. Let us also take the time to ensure we continue to create a culture of safety and support on our campus.
