Religion is believed to be “a balm and a risk,” in a pandemic. Can differences in national religious environment explain disparities in COVID-19 mortality? Framing on religious ecology theory, the cross-country relationship between COVID-19 mortality rates and religious diversity (measured as the country’s largest religious group) is studied, controlling for other underlying factors, in a worldwide sample of countries. This ecological analysis supports the fundamental importance of cultural factors in accounting for variations in COVID-19 mortality.
