Based on 40 women’s experiences within Protestant girls’ groups in Canada from 1950 to the 1980s, this research shows the complicated nature of Canadian girlhood and religion in the secular age. The groups of study — including Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), Calvinettes, Pioneer Girls and Girls’ Auxiliary— were a highly significant space for those involved and we will consider the gendered, spiritual and emotional aspects of girls’ experiences within the groups.

Shelby Martens is a PhD candidate at the University of New Brunswick studying Canadian girlhood and lived religious experience through oral history interviews.
