Come learn and meet successful women in STEM at ULethbridge’s first Women in STEM Career Panel.

The career panel will be hosted by this year’s EDI Scholar and will focus on our panelists’ journey to their current careers. Following the panel, stay and meet with our panelists to connect. Refreshments will be provided.

Who:

Laura Chasmer

Laura Chasmer is an associate professor in physical geography and remote sensing at the University of Lethbridge. Laura completed her PhD at Queen's University and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University before joining the University of Lethbridge in 2018. 

As a student, Laura was one of a few women interested in remote sensing, which includes Earth imaging using satellites and aircraft to understand Earth system processes. Since then, many more women have joined, and continue to diversify the use of geospatial technologies to observe and understand some of the biggest environmental issues we see today.

 

Susan Findlay

Named the recipient of the University Lethbridge’s 2021 Excellence in Teaching Award, Susan Findlay aims to provide a positive, supportive learning environment in all her chemistry courses.

Susan completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph and her doctoral degree in organic chemistry at the University of Calgary. She joined the U of L Chemistry & Biochemistry Department as an Instructor in 2004. Susan uses innovative teaching strategies to help make learning chemistry fun.

 

Suzanne Sjovold

Suzanne combines her technical background in neuroscience with 15 years of intellectual property (IP) legal experience to effectively develop and manage her clients’ IP assets. As a registered patent and trademark agent, Suzanne’s assists clients in the life sciences space, including those involved in novel medical devices, chemical compounds, biologics and pharmaceuticals. Suzanne also assists clients with protecting mechanical devices, clean energy technologies and new technologies in the oil and gas sector.

Suzanne grew up in Lethbridge and attended the University of Lethbridge, earning a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience. After completing her Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Alberta, Suzanne attended law school at the U of A with an aim to practice intellectual property, bridging the gap between the scientific and legal spheres.  

 

Kristina Santiago-Mateo

Born and raised in the Philippines, Kristina graduated in 1996 with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of the Philippines. She worked for an animal pharmaceutical company for two years before becoming a researcher at the International Livestock Research Institute.

In 2001, Kristina moved to the U.S. to pursue an MSc in Animal Science and PhD in Biological Sciences from the South Dakota State University. Immigrating to Canada in 2010, she was hired at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as a researcher at the Anthrax/Yersinia Research Laboratory in Lethbridge. Kristina was awarded a three-year NSERC Visiting Postdoctorate Fellowship (2012 – 2015), working at the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) Laboratory at CFIA Lethbridge. She has been employed by CFIA in Lethbridge since 2016 as a senior laboratory analyst.

Kristina is also a proud wife and mother of two children.

 

Julie Legault

Designer Julie Legault is an expert in transforming complex technology into experiences for the general public. She holds a Master of Science from M.I.T. Media Lab (US) and a Master of Art from the Royal College of Art (UK). She is the Founder and CEO of Amino Labs (www.amino.bio), the company pioneering accessible biotechnology in the home and school, co-author of Zero to Genetic Engineering Hero, and Biotechnology Faculty at Singularity University.

 

Krysty Thomas

Krysty completed her BSc (Biological Sciences, 2006) and MSc (Molecular Biology, 2013) at the University of Lethbridge. She currently works as a research technician at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Lethbridge Development and Research Centre where she studies all things cow poop, with a focus on the human pathogen E. coli O157:H7. She supports the work of a research scientist by writing scientific reports, editing peer reviewed manuscripts, and helps to prepare research proposals. She also helps to facilitate the on boarding of students, postdoctoral fellows and international visitors.

She is very involved with her union (Public Service Alliance of Canada) and the broader labour movement. She is a passionate advocate for worker’s rights, accessible child care, quality public services, human rights and equity.

Krysty has two young children and in her spare time she enjoys road cycling, spinning, and cross country skiing with her family.

 

Christine Lewington

Christine was born in Calgary and grew up in Southern Alberta. After attending Brigham Young University in Idaho, Christine has taken on a multitude of different entrepreneurship endeavours. Christine has been a project manager professional for over 20 years and has spent some of that time leading projects for a large multinational food company.

PIP International was founded in 2020 gaining the rights to commercialize a new and innovative pea protein extraction technology. As PIP’s CEO, Christine is uniquely contributing to the agri-processing sector. Women are still underrepresented in the global agricultural workforce and face significant barriers in senior leadership positions. Breaking those barriers and moving PIP to a fully operational, automated, one-of-a-kind pea protein isolate extraction facility is what Christine does best.
