Iwasaki Masami (Hokkai-Gakuen University)
Nomoto Masahiro (Ainu Museum)
Tezuka Kaoru (Hokkai-Gakuen University)
The 1997 Ainu Cultural Promotion Law marked the beginning of a new era for the Ainu policy in Japan. The efforts to revitalize various cultural activities became intensified on local, national and international levels. One of the most ambitious projects is a plan to construct a National Ainu Museum in Shiraoi, Hokkaido. One of the members of the research team is the director of the existing Ainu Museum in Shiraoi, where the new national Ainu museum is to be built. The team approaches the issues surrounding the national project from the perspectives of the Ainu and to eventually question the issues concerning Ainu initiatives in this project. Since the project is still in the planning stage, the examination of the project should be considered as preliminary. The goal of this presentation therefore is to review the background of the project and the proposed plan.
