Unveiling the Peace Garden Mural - National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women

The ULethbridge Library, in collaboration with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team, is pleased to invite the campus community to the 35th Anniversary of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Canadian institutions were forever changed when, on December 6, 1989, 14 brilliant women attending École Polytechnique in Montreal lost their lives simply for being women. Recent events have shown that the ongoing violence against women and gender-diverse individuals continues to remind us that this work is more important than ever before and that the conversation must continue.

On December 6 at 11 a.m., the University of Lethbridge Peace Garden Mural will be unveiled as a place of reflection and remembrance of those 14 women who lost their lives. It is important that we do not forget their names.

The Peace Garden mural was created by ULethbridge student Claire Lahey, who is a 2nd year Fine Arts student.

Artist description: The University of Lethbridge is dedicated to achieving a campus free from gender-based violence. This mural represents each of the women who lost their lives due to this tragedy, honouring them with a rose. It represents growth to a safer, happier future. The art creates a narrative honouring these women, and educating students to build a safe campus, free from gender-based violence.
