Many Albertans are unhappy with Federal Policies: Is it Time for Alberta to renegotiate its Relationship with Canada?

Ideally, Albertans seek a modern Canadian federated state with collaborative politics, internal free trade and an equal voice for all citizens. Confederation was arguably not built to achieve these objectives when it was born more than 150 years ago and the time may have come to challenge Alberta’s current relationship with Canada. It is like two partners living together, one dissatisfied, one content – should Alberta have a meaningful discussion with Ottawa about their future relationship sooner rather than later?

No matter which political party holds power in Ottawa, there is a sustained argument that suggests Albertans are right in addressing the political deficiencies of Canada’s federation and in doing so, it could help improve livelihoods for Albertans and indeed for most Canadians. The speaker will argue that the problem is endemic to the very structure of the country.

Speaker:              Randy Royer

Randy Royer has spent over 50 years working in all aspects of the hospitality industry with an emphasis on development, finance, and management. He started by washing glasses, before dishwashers, for the bar in his father’s Lethbridge hotel. By age 12, he was 6 feet tall and working as a bouncer for the bar.  Randy moved on up the corporate ladder over the years and in the early 90’s co-founded and served as the President and CEO of the Royal Host Real Estate Investment Trust, a publicly traded hospitality trust.

Throughout his career, Randy has conceived, defined, financed, constructed and managed over 30 hotels including the Banff Rocky Mountain Resort and the Grand Okanagan Resort in Kelowna, which was ultimately sold for a profit of $100M. Randy excels at identifying consumer trends and turning those insights into a profitable development vision. He is currently developing a 12-acre ocean front property in Colwood, near Victoria, BC.
