Alberta’s electricity fleet creates almost as much greenhouse gas emissions as the oil sands sector, accounts for almost half of all of the greenhouse gas emissions from electricity in Canada. While coal is phased out of the system over the coming decades, a wholesale switch to natural gas will result in emissions continuing to rise. Renewable energy can play an important opportunity in changing this direction. Wind energy is one of the most cost- effective options available in Alberta, even at today’s historically low natural gas prices. Southern Alberta is home to some of the best wind and solar resources in Canada and is positioned to help Alberta reduce its emissions and move towards a more sustainable energy system.
