TOPIC: The Beautiful Math of Bubbles
Date: Friday, Feb. 6
Location: SA6012
Time: 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Abstract: If I dip a wireframe into soapy water, it creates beautiful bubbles with all kinds of interesting geometries. Can we derive precisely what shapes these bubbles form? In this talk we'll explore the idea of minimal surfaces. I'll share a powerful technique in the Calculus of Variations that can help us to determine equations for minimal surfaces, we'll see a range of recent results, and of course I'll have to show you plenty of pretty bubbles!
