The Department of Philosophy will present the following:
Nietzsche, Nominalism, and Truth
Presenter: Karl Laderoute (Philosophy Department)
Day/Date: Friday, April 17, 2015
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: C-640 (University Hall)
In Nietzsche’s works we find a tension: he claims that human thinking always falsifies reality and that we can never attain truth, but he also lauds the pursuit of truth and science as our best instrument for attaining knowledge. I explain away this tension by arguing that Nietzsche is a nominalist, specifically one who rejects abstract objects. Once this rejection is understood, we can recognize Nietzsche’s sceptical claims as a rhetorical attack on the classical correspondence theory of truth. After explaining Nietzsche’s argumentative strategy, I then outline his new conception of perspective-dependent truth.
Everyone welcome.
