Is it possible for dialogue between Native American and Western cultures, ideas, epistemologies and ideals
to be both respectful and mutually transformative? As a non-Native Canadian born and raised in a northern
James Bay Cree community, I find the more important question is this: how did we get to the point where
such a question is even asked, and how can we get to the point where it no longer relevant – where an
affirmative answer is self-evident? My scholarly research – in its origins, recent history and current
trajectory – is intimately linked to these questions, and this presentation seeks to give insights into both.
