National Indigenous Peoples Day 2026 Celebration

As part of National Indigenous History Month, this event to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) is held in partnership with Iikaisskini Indigenous Services, Ayaahkimina Indigenous Wellness and the Elders in Residence program.

Piiksinaasin, Faculty of Fine Arts will be announcing the Indigenous Artist(s) in Residence program and launch call for applications at this event.

A Blackfoot naming ceremony will be held for Carter Provost, a former Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and Indigenous Student Success Certificate (ISSC) student. Provost is a ULethbridge undergraduate student who completed placement hours through the Indigenous Mental Health and Elders in Residence program with Santanita Oka and Elders Dr. Francis First Charger, Cathy Hunt and Shirlee Crow Shoe.

Provost will be receiving a Blackfoot name in a ceremony with Dr. Francis First Charger and Rueben Big Sorell Horse will do a praise song. Lunch will follow.

  • 11-11:30 a.m. Opening Blessing with Francis First Charger, Welcome with Dr. Leroy Little Bear, Remarks and Announcement with Dr. Heather Davis-Fisch, Dean, Piiksinaasin, Faculty of Fine Arts
  • 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Naming Ceremony and Praise Song by Rueben Big Sorrell Horse
  • 12 -1:30 p.m. Feast in Atrium and Gathering Centre
