"Kinds and Category Cognition"
Guest Speaker:  Prof. Hector MacIntyre (Research Services, U of L)
Day/Date:  Wednesday, March 25, 2015
Time:  4:00 p.m.
Location:  C-674

Appealing partly to Dennett's quasi-realism, Khalidi (2013) argues for a unitary theory of natural and special science kinds as simple causal patterns.  His main premise is epistemological, and I assess it in light of the findings of categorization research in cognitive and developmental psychology.  Leslie (2013) has argued that these findings reveal a strong cognitive bias toward essentialism at work in our epistemic intuitions about kinds.  I discuss how the research on artifact categorization both supports and attenuates this claim, but ultimately I hold that Khalidi's premise is false.

Everyone is welcome.
