"I was born in 1999, to what generation do I belong?" - Defining "Millennial" in social media discourses.
In popular discourses such as found on, but not exclusive to, social media, Millennials are assumed as a unified, homogenous, and singular entity, which is observable, real, and true. Despite these fixed assumptions, this generational label is surprisingly ill-defined by scholars and institutes (Beamish, 2016; Mottola, 2014; Pew Research Center, 2010; 2017; Strauss & Howe, 1991; 1997). My research challenges such normative categories that are presumed to be value-free and enduring.
My dissertation work examines social media discourses about Millennials by non-Millennials and reactionary discourses by self-identifying Millennials using self-created corpora from Twitter and Reddit. I here present parts of a critical discourse analysis of Twitter and Reddit posts that examines hegemonic and counter-hegemonic discourses. Specifically, this talk will address the generational ambivalence voiced by self-identifying Millennials in juxtaposition to the ostensibly clear-cut ways in which the Millennial generational label is used and reproduced.
