Talk Title: "Encoding and Transmitting Affective States"

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jaideep Bains
Day/Date: Friday, November 22 2019
Time: 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Location: SA6008

Abstract: Understanding the emotional or affective state is critical to building social relationships, avoiding danger and developing empathy. Furthermore, an inability to accurately detect emotions in others, and/or respond accordingly, is a feature of a number of developmental disorders, including ASD and schizophrenia. This emotional detection is not limited to humans, but our understanding of the neurobiology responsible for transmission of affect or detection of emotional states in others is not well understood. I will discuss our findings that suggest the detection of negative affective state in others is controlled by cells that coordinate the brain’s response to stress.
