Free Shredding Event: A Nightmare on Shred Street 5

In support of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services is partnering with Lethbridge Mobile Shredding and DBS Environmental to offer free shredding of personal paper materials, hard drive degaussing, and e-waste recycling to the public. Students’ Union staff will be on hand to collect donations of cash and non-perishable food items for the campus food bank.

Who: Students, staff, faculty, and members of the public

When: Monday, October 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Outside the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness

What: Identity theft and fraud are among the fastest growing crimes in Canada. This is spooky stuff! Protect yourself from identity thieves by safely disposing of personal items such as:

  • Bank statements
  • Credit card bills
  • Utility bills
  • Pay stubs
  • Tax documents
  • Medical records
  • Store receipts
  • Electronic files (photos, passwords, personal communications, contact lists, etc.) 
  • Electronic storage media (hard drives, USB keys, etc.)
  • Old credit cards and ID cards

Records Management has compiled guidance to help you determine what personal documents you should keep and for how long in one, convenient information sheet.

How:

Paper shredding:

  • Limit of six boxes per person
  • Don’t worry about removing staples, paper clips, elastic bands, coil bindings, or binder clips
  • Remove all binders, plastic sleeves, hanging file folders, garbage, etc.  
  • Photos and books can be accepted

Non-paper materials:

  • Hard drives will be degaussed on site and then recycled with e-waste
  • Other non-paper materials will not be accepted for shredding 

E-Waste:

Note: University records, including student work held by academic departments or staff, will not be accepted at this event. Please visit the Records Management site for details on how to dispose of these materials.

Free. Donations for the campus food bank are appreciated.
