The mention of Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century inevitably conjures up images of bohemia, artists and “modern” women. During this period, female artists were undoubtedly becoming more visible on the Parisian scene but, as French society remained extremely attached to traditional gender roles, these women continually challenged gender boundaries.
The upcoming presentation on female artists in Lucie Delarue-Mardrus’ novels is a study of the figure of the female artist in the work of Lucie Delarue-Mardrus, a successful French poet and novelist whose fictional characters allowed her to explore the artistic ambitions of women and the obstacles they encountered.
