Book Launch - A Special Hell

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

We are thrilled to announce the publication of “A Special Hell: Institutional Life in Alberta’s Eugenic Years.” This book, over 15 years in the making, draws on oral history interviews with ex-inmates of Alberta’s Michener Centre (formerly the Provincial Training School for Mental Defectives), whose stories are powerful and cautionary, and Eugenic Board and Michener Centre archival records. Together, the survivor narratives and the archival record paint a harrowing picture of institutional life and the casual violence embedded in the Alberta Eugenics program, which operated legally and publicly from 1928 to 1972.

Join us Thursday, February 12, 2015, 7pm at the Dr. Foster James Penny Building, Room PB200 for the official launch. Light refreshments will be served.
