In the current social and political climate, the actions taken by allies are more critical than ever. As we see a global surge of anti-queer and anti-trans sentiments through misinformation and policies, the weight of the fight for 2SLGBTQ+ rights continues to fall squarely on the shoulders of queer and trans people. This exponential increase in attacks on queer lives has left many mentally and emotionally burnt out from the constant barrage of bad news, bad takes and bad policy, coupled with the expectation to fight again for rights that had already been won. It is now, more than ever, that 2SLGBTQ+ communities need allies to stand up and stand with them as they continue to advocate for the equitable treatment and human rights of all queer and trans people.

This one-hour virtual workshop will focus on the who, what, when, where, why and how of 2SLGBTQ+ allyship: Who can be ally? What is allyship in practice? When should allies take action? Where can allyship take place? Why do we need allies to take action? And most importantly — how can we be active allies in the collective struggle for queer and trans rights? We will explore how you can be an ally and the many ways in which allyship can take shape. No effort is too small, and perfection is not the goal, but rather kindness and empathy as we seek to build a community of allies who work together for their friends, neighbors, loved ones and colleagues. This workshop will be hosted on Zoom and is open to all members of the ULethbridge campus community as well as the broader Lethbridge and southern Alberta communities.
