October 26, 2005 — Heidelberg

Arriving in Frankfurt we were soon on our way to Heidelberg, the oldest university town in Germany. The result - a million bicycles.

We toured the impressive castle with its romantic ruins and got a foggy view of the surrounding Neckar Valley. The castle which developed over many centuries, was once the residence of the mighty Count Palatine, the most influential ruler in this part of Europe. Some of us drooled over what is said to be the largest wooden barrel ever to have been filled with wine. Constructed in 1751, it holds 58,000 gallons of wine.

Continuing on we visited the historic city center for a guided walk followed by lunch at the Hotel Ritter. In the afternoon, there was free time to shop and explore on your own.

Eventually, it was time to board the busses and find our ship which we hoped would be in Aschaffenburg, further along the Main River. With some difficulty we found it and while listening to the Headlight Showband we sailed along to Miltenherg where the ship stayed overnight.
