October 24, 2005 — Cologne

The morning found us cruising on the legendary Rhine. Peaceful river meadows and idyllic villages appeared along the riverbanks. We passed Duisburg, the world's largest inland port. Here we encountered the mouth of the Ruhr, the lifeline of Germany's Ruhr District. We cruised through fashionable Dusseldorf before arriving in Cologne, The ship docked near the cathedral, making for an easy drive to the centre of the old town where we spent some time exploring the many shops before preparing for the captain's dinner.

It was hard to believe the famous catheral managed to survive such destruction.
