Aaron Stout

About

Aaron Stout attended the University of Lethbridge, earning a B.A. in History, a B.Ed., and a M.A. in Education. He was a high school social studies teacher in the Lethbridge School Division prior to joining the Faculty of Education as an instructor in 2016. In his personal life, Aaron is interested in how a holistic approach to health and wellness can improve living and learning environments.

Teaching Interests

With a deep commitment to inquiry based learning strategies, Aaron promotes a child-centred teaching philosophy grounded in relational classrooms. Social studies education at its core is focused around citizenship education, which involves understanding people and how they interact in local, national, and global contexts. A key to social studies is developing a humanistic approach that values the importance of human voice and creativity.

As an instructor in the faculty, Aaron teaches exclusively in the undergraduate program. He also is the coordinator of the EDUC 2500 program, which serves as an introduction to teaching for all students interested in applying for admission to the faculty of education. In addition, he is a member of the wellness committee, promoting a community of wellbeing for pre-service teachers.

Research Interests

History education is an area of interest that Aaron continues to pursue. He explores the theoretical and curriculum considerations that shape and structure history education in classrooms. Approaching history through an inquiry lens allows one to cultivate an appreciation for the humanities and a liberal education approach. As history is approached as a social construct, critical pedagogy and anti-racist theories inform considerations that are essential for a more inclusive understanding of the past. As a member of the wellness committee, Aaron is also interested in how wellness is realized as a precondition for learning in pre-service teacher education.
