It’s hard being a honey bee these days. They face attack by mites and parasites, pesticides and extreme weather events associated with climate change, such as floods, droughts and fires, all of which make it increasingly difficult for honey bees to thrive.
Honey bees are vital for pollinating many crops, including high-value crops like blueberries, canola hybrid seed production and canola as a commodity. The result of high mortality rates among honey bees is crops that are under-pollinated and produce lower yields.

The University of Lethbridge, with support from Lethbridge Polytechnic and the City of Lethbridge, will host the fifth annual STEM Fusion conference on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 1 to 8 p.m. in the Science Commons Atrium.
The annual conference connects science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals with commercialization, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Chelsea Ekstrand, a University of Lethbridge assistant professor at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, has been awarded a 2023 Future Leader in Canadian Brain Research grant. Worth $100,000, the grant is through Brain Canada in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Brain Health and Cognitive Impairment in Aging Research Initiative.
