Which route would you choose to haul carts over?

In August 1858, members of the Palliser Expedition penetrated the Rocky Mountains searching for a suitable route for a proposed railway.

For generations it has been accepted that while James Hector was exploring the Banff Park area and Thomas Blakiston was exploring the Waterton Park area, John Palliser was going over the North Kananaskis Pass.

Is it possible historians are wrong?

Mr. Larry Boyd, a long time trail guide and rancher in the area, has long taken an interest in John Palliser's explorations through Kananaskis Country. He says the so called "experts" are wrong. Boyd believes that Palliser went over today's Elk Pass.

I repeat - which pass would you choose to haul carts over?

 

In a report to Lord Stanley October 7 1858, Palliser stated:

"I am rejoiced to say that I have completely succeeded in discovering not only a pass practicable for horses, but one which, with but little expense, could be rendered available for carts also ... The Pass is situated precisely where I had long supposed..."
