Jim Cousins, former history professor at the University of Lethbridge, had while reading the journals of Lewis and Clark years ago stumbled across the name Peter Fidler. Outside his own journals, there was little reference to him anywhere but the mention of him by Lewis & Clark got Jim interested. Was this man Peter Fidler possibly the first European to visit southern Alberta?

Lewis & Clark were searching for a mountain that had been called "The Tooth" which in a footnote the editor (Bernard A De Voto Journals of Lewis and Clark P.133) stated "In 1791 and 1792 he (Fidler) made a brilliant journey up the branch of the Saskatchewan River and along the foot of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta..."
