The Lolo Trail has hosted many historical events, and carries the memories of hundreds of years of American Indian use.  Two National Historic Trails - the Nez Perce and the Lewis and Clark - stretch the full length of the Lolo Trail, which is also a National Historic Landmark.

There is now talk of restricting traffic by way of a lottery based permit system so please make enquiries before planning to travel this route..

Unlike many other trails that hug river banks and stay at the bottom of drainages, the Lolo trail was a ridgetop trail. Since south-facing ridges are dry and have fewer trees, it was much easier for horses to travel through scattered trees than through forests choked with downed timber.
