Why this formation was called "Hero's Cliff" is a mystery. Blakiston does not say if it was already called that before he arrived. If, indeed, he named it, maybe it was because he was one who had many heroes. On this trip alone he named landmarks after David Livingstone, John Gould, Francis Galton and Charles Waterton.
