August 7, 1858
In the afternoon the road was very bad at some places, but with the help
of the Indians, who were very well disposed, we reached the site of the
Old Bow Fort at sunset...
Located about 55 km west north-west of Calgary all that
remains today are small piles of rocks.
Some distance away a sign along the Trans-Canada Highway reads:
"In an attempt to lure the Peigan and Blackfoot Indians away from American
traders on the Missouri River, the Hudson's Bay Company constructed a fort
four miles north of this point in 1832. It had a brief existence for the
Blood Indians, who were supposed to trade in Edmonton were jealous and would
not let their allies come to trade. The fort was under danger of attack
on several occasions and was finally abandoned in January 1834."
Old Bow Fort was also known as Peigan Post.
