In the angle thus formed is a large lake,
... and at its head a glacier, of small size, nearly reaches the water level.
Since Hector's time glaciers in the Rockies have been retreating so that the glacier seen to the right of the picture is much smaller. Hector Lake was named by George M. Dawson(Sketchbook III) in 1884
Tucked behind to the left is Mt. Balfour which Hector named after John Hutton Balfour, MD (1808-1884) who was a Scots botanist who trained Hector and provided much engouragement to the Palliser Expedition.
