A fur trading post, Rocky Mountain House was built by the North West Company in 1799. In the following years the post, which became the property of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821 was opened and closed many times depending on the "business climate" of the time between the Indians and fur traders.

A total of three posts were built on the site in 1799, 1835 and 1866 respectively. The last post was abandonned in 1875 but two stone chimneys still stand.

Today, the site is a National Historic Park
