This plain, which is 7 or 8 miles long, and 2 to 3 wide,
is called the Kootanie Plain, as at the time that the Kootanie Indians exchanged
their furs with the traders of the Saskatchewan forts, before there was
any communication with them from the Pacific coast,
Today much of the Kootenay Plains seen here in winter, has been flooded
with the creation of Abraham Lake behind Bighorn Dam
The name for this lake was the result of a contest held in 1972 for Alberta
students.
The name perpetuates the memories of Silas Abraham and other members of
his family who hunted and trapped in the area.
Here is a map of the area today
