New Zealand Honours James Hector


~ The Hector Medal and Prize is awarded by the NZ Royal Society for exellence in research.

~ "Hector's Dolphin "is the world's rarest dolphin. (Now protected by a marine reserve at Banks Peninsula)

~ Mount Hector (1529 metres) is located in the Tararua Range on North Island.

~ Hector River flows from the northern slopes of Mount Hector.

~ A small coastal settlement at the mouth of the Ngakawau river, Buller County, South Island is called Hector.

~ Hector Col (Pass) is located on the western side of Mount Bevan in the Southern Alps. It was crossed by Hector's party in 1863.

~ Lake Hector is a small lake in Fiordland, on the South Island.

~ Hector Mountains is a range in Central Otago that was named by the surveyor James McKerrow after James Hector.
