Living with a Volcano

June 11, 2008 — Rishiri Island, Japan

Around 7 a.m. we docked at Kutsukata Port, where the classical cone-shaped volcano of Rishiri Island loomed before us

We circumnavigated the island stopping at Otatomari Pond for a nature walk. Then it was on to a seacoast overlook on the south end of the island and a visit to a great little municipal museum.

On leaving, we were greeted by local school children with farewell gifts and following dinner had an outstanding lecture on Stalin by Tim Baughman.

Next, we headed for the northern tip of Hokkaido for our outward clearance from Japan. The Japanese Immigration inspectors scanned our passports and did a face check then following our daily briefing we set our clocks ahead 2 hours and steamed into Russian territory.
