June 10, 2008 — Sapporo - Otaru, Japan

This morning we continued our exploration of Sapporo with a visit to the open-air Hokkaido Historical Village. We had visited the village some 14 years ago but this visit was to the new and most impressive museum. Then it was off to Hokkaido University Botanical Garden where on my first to Japan in 1990 I viewed Thomas Blakiston's bird specimens. You will find much about Thomas Blakiston by searching my ourheritage.net web site. Clicking here will take you to his birds but please come back and join us for our ship adventure.

Next we drove to the charming harbor city of Otaru where we enjoyed lunch at a very posh hotel and an hour touring Kitaichi Glass shops and the historic Canal Zone. At 4 pm we embarked the Clipper Odyssey and following a champagne reception and a Japanese drum band sendoff we set sail northward.

Receiving the call for the mandatory life jacket drill we noticed the sea was rougher than expected. Some never made it to supper.
