November 1, 2005 — Passau — Schaerding

The ship cruised through the night and in the morning we glided in to Passau, where the Inn and the Ilz Rivers meet the Danube. The town is dominated by the Veste Oberhaus, the former fortress of the Bishop, on the mountain crest between the Danube and the Ilz.

It was tour time again for one of Bavaria's oldest and most beautiful cities. With charming cobblestone streets and graceful arcades, Passau is Germany's eastern-most port. Since all three rivers meet at the same point, often the rivers flood here. Passau was perfect for exploring.(note the many high water marks) Included in our visit was St. Stephans Cathedral, housing the largest pipe organ in the world.

After lunch we were on our way to the Mariahilfer Monastery, above Passau, where we had a panoramic view of the city below. Then we continued into Austria, by following the River Inn Valley where the continuing fog hampered our viewing. We passed throughWernstein, before arriving at the small, baroque Austrian town of Schaerding. I felt I was on a movie set that went on and on.

After the visit we returned to Passau but as it was now into November and it was dark by the time we arrived below the Veste Oberhaus, the Bishops' former fortress. After supper we were entertained with The One & Only River Duchess Crew Show. The star feature was cruise manager Doris's rendition of Crazy.(Sorry she's in the dark, The River Duchess has poor - read no - stage lighting. As you have probably noticed.)
