October 29, 2005 — Bamberg

Today, we started off with a glass blowing demonstration as we approached and entered (a rather tight fit) locks of the Main-Danube Canal which passes Bamberg, one of Germany's most beautiful cities.

Disembarking we enjoyed a guided tour of this medieval gem, with its uniquely intact townscape which boasts over 1000 years of history.

We saw the market, the cathedral and the Old Town Hall which sits on a man made island, as we walked along the city's serpentine streets with charming houses and 18th century mansions. The town suffered little damage in the Second World War and is being carefully preserved. It is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Next to the cathedral famous for its sculptures is the Prince Bishop's residencial apartments, a great viewpoint of the city and spacious gardens.

Returning to the market area we had a chance to window shop before taking a drive through the picturesque countryside to Forchheim, where we re-boarded the ship. After dinner, continuing along the Main-Danube Canal, we were treated to a Bavarian Beer Experience. Later that evening we arrived in Nuremberg.
