Withdrawal

Students can withdraw from courses after the Extended Drop deadline up to and including the last day of classes in a term or session as specified in the Academic Schedule. A ‘W’ designation is assigned for each course from which a student withdraws (see Academic Regulations, Grading).

Failure to withdraw results in the assignment of grades by the instructor for the course(s) in which the student is registered. Students are responsible for ensuring that they withdraw on the Bridge by the relevant deadline (see Academic Schedule).

Students considering withdrawing from a course are encouraged to seek advice from an academic advisor to understand the implications withdrawing may have on program progression, course sequencing, prerequisites, and student loan and scholarship eligibility. Student athletes should consult with their coach and/or the Manager of Pronghorn Athletics regarding implications to athletic eligibility.

a.Course Withdrawal

An undergraduate student wishing to withdraw from one or more courses in the term, but not all courses, must withdraw on the Bridge by the relevant deadline (see Academic Schedule). There is no tuition refunded for withdrawing from a course because that seat cannot be filled after the add deadline. To receive a tuition refund, the student must drop the course by the extended drop deadline.

A student may not withdraw from a course in order to avoid an academic offense. If a student withdraws from a course and it is after determined that the student committed an academic offense, the ‘W’ grade may be overturned as per the Undergraduate Academic Offense policy.

b.Complete Withdrawal

An undergraduate student may completely withdraw from their courses by logging into the Bridge and withdrawing from their courses by the relevant deadline (see Academic Schedule). Students considering complete withdrawal should consult their Faculty or School academic advising office prior to completely withdrawing their registration.

c.Late Withdrawal

Late Withdrawal is granted only in the case of serious illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student, which makes it impossible for the student to withdraw from courses prior to the withdrawal deadline. The grade designation for a late withdrawal is ‘WL’. For admitted students, the ‘WL’ is recorded only upon application to and approval from the Faculty or School advising office after the withdrawal deadline. Late withdrawal requests will not be accepted prior to the withdrawal deadline and will only be accepted until the extended drop deadline of the subsequent term. For Open Studies students, the ‘WL’ is recorded only upon application to and approval from Student Enrolment and Registrar Services (SEARS). Withdrawing from courses may effect registration for future terms. Courses that receive ‘WL’ will not meet prerequisites for subsequent courses. A student seeking Late Withdrawal means withdrawing from all the courses in that term.

d.Part-time Reclassification

Withdrawing from one or more courses may result in a reclassification from full-time to part-time status (see Full-time and Part-time). Students who drop from full-time to part-time status may not receive the same privileges as full-time students at the University. Furthermore, students who access government student loans and drop to part-time status may have their eligibility for future student loans and the terms of repayment of current loans affected. For more information, students should consult an academic advisor.
